Our soil is full of a variety of metal, the most prominent of which in our area is iron. These metals can be dissolved in water and can be unnoticeable to the eye. However, once that water evaporates it leaves behind the metals, resulting in discoloration. While iron is not considered harmful, it does come with a list of unwanted side effects.
The DNR recommended level of iron is 0.3mg/l or less. Staining can begin even below those levels.
